Jessica is right. It wasn't Macaca, it was good performance by Jim Webb. I would add that George Allen had already lost many from the libertarian-Republicans (a block of about 25% of the electorate) because of his support for "W's" domestic spying and warrantless searches. I saw George Allen booed by a crowd who had gathered to hear him speak in Chesterfield (well before the Macaca episode). The traditionally conservative crowd had been mostly supportive, until Allen responded to a question from the audience saying that he supported the domestic spying (against our own People) because this was just like the war against the Nazis. The citizen who had asked why Allen was supporting domestic spying, etc. responded by saying, "We are not Nazis!" Then the whole crowd booed Allen. I had never seen him booed for anything.

Perhaps because there were no TV reporters present at that event, the Press was slow to recognize that Allen had lost a major segment of his core support over his support of "W's" trashing of our Constitution.
